The Basics of Regen Agriculture

Plants are not particularly efficient at converting available sunlight into growth. Under typical conditions, the photosynthetic process captures only around six percent of the light energy that reaches the leaf.

Regenerative thinking starts from a different place entirely. The soil almost certainly isn't missing nutrients. What it may be missing is the biological activity needed to move those nutrients from where they're stored to where roots can reach them. That shift in diagnosis leads to a fundamentally different set of actions.

A healthy lawn or garden isn't a static collection of soil and plants — it's a system in motion. Nutrients are constantly shifting between forms, moving between organisms, and cycling from living to non-living and back again. The speed and efficiency of that movement, more than any other factor, determines how well a garden grows.

Bacteria, fungi, and earthworms are the organisms most people think of when they imagine soil life, and for good reason. Their essential role is breaking down what has died — fallen leaves, grass clippings, old roots, organic matter of every kind — and returning the nutrients locked inside back to the living cycle.

The soil beneath a typical yard already holds enormous reserves of nutrients. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron — these elements exist in quantities that would dwarf anything purchased at a garden center. And the air above every square foot of lawn contains nitrogen in almost incomprehensible abundance. So why do lawns go yellow? Why do gardens stall? Not because nutrients are absent, but because they aren't moving.

How does Nitrogen enter a natural system? Nitrogen enters natural ecosystems from two primary sources. Biological Nitrogen Fixation – Certain microorganisms can capture nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and convert it into forms that plants can use.
