Your Lawn is Part of the Watershed

Most homeowners do not think of their lawn as part of a watershed. Yet every lawn, garden, driveway, and rooftop is connected to a larger system of streams, rivers, and lakes.


A watershed is simply an area of land where rainfall and snowmelt drain to a common body of water. When rain falls on your property, some of it soaks into the soil, some is used by plants, and some runs across the surface carrying soil particles, fertilizer, pesticides, and other pollutants with it.


The way you manage your lawn can have a direct impact on water quality downstream.


Build Healthy Soil

The most effective way to protect the watershed is to improve your soil. Healthy soils contain organic matter, stable soil structure, and a thriving community of microbes and earthworms.


Healthy soil acts like a sponge. It absorbs rainfall, reduces runoff, and allows water to move deeper into the ground where it can be stored for future plant use.


Practices such as mulching grass clippings, adding compost, minimizing soil disturbance, and maintaining living roots help build soil health over time.


Keep the Ground Covered

Bare soil is vulnerable to erosion. A dense lawn, garden plants, mulch, and ground covers protect the soil surface from the impact of raindrops and slow the movement of water across the landscape.


A thicker lawn not only looks better, it also reduces the amount of sediment and nutrients leaving your property during storms.


Use Fertilizers Wisely

Plants can only use so much fertilizer at one time. Excess nutrients are easily washed away during heavy rainfall.

Apply nutrients only when needed, follow soil test recommendations, and avoid applications immediately before significant rain events. Consider compost, slow-release nutrient sources, and practices that encourage natural nutrient cycling within the soil.


Water Smarter

Frequent shallow watering encourages shallow roots and can increase runoff. Instead, water deeply and less often to encourage deeper root growth and greater drought resilience.

A lawn with deep roots requires less irrigation and is better able to withstand dry periods.


Create Areas that Capture Water

Rain gardens, native plantings, and strategically placed landscape beds can help slow and absorb stormwater before it leaves your property.

Even small areas planted with deep-rooted native species can significantly improve infiltration while providing habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects.


Think Beyond Your Property

Every yard is connected to the larger landscape. When homeowners improve soil health, reduce runoff, and use fewer inputs, the benefits extend beyond the property line.

Cleaner water, healthier streams, reduced flooding, and more resilient landscapes all begin with the choices made in individual lawns and gardens.


Good lawn stewardship is not just about growing grass. It is about managing a small piece of the watershed in a way that benefits your family, your community, and the environment.
